House approves five-year extension of E-Verify

The federal E-Verify employee verification system, due to expire at the end of November, would be extended for five years under a bill passed by the House. Employer groups commended the vote as an improvement over the 10-year extension previously sought by House leaders. "E-Verify is not a long-term solution," said Mike Aitken of the Society for Human Resource Management in a statement, adding that the House-passed bill would "allow the time required to craft a verification system that works fairly and effectively." The Senate may take up a similar bill in September.  (Select News, 1 Aug 2008)
